won or merchant_credited_and_recovered, dispute.recovered_amount is how much of the disputed money was recovered through the chargeback, and dispute.recovered_currency tells you what currency that is in. On a won case that is normally the full disputed amount. On a merchant_credited_and_recovered case it is less, because the merchant refunded part of the transaction to the cardholder.
Both fields are null on any other status, and read-only.
Refunded and Recovered
merchant_credited_and_recovered covers the case where the merchant refunded the cardholder for part of the transaction after you filed. The acquirer represents the refunded part, and the chargeback recovers the rest. In the example above, the merchant refunded $9.90 of a $29.90 dispute, the acquirer represented $9.90, and $20.00 was recovered through the chargeback.
The cardholder got all their money back, as in a win. The difference from won is how much you should credit the cardholder. The merchant already refunded the cardholder part of the disputed amount, so credit the cardholder the dispute.recovered_amount ($20.00 in the example).
recovered_currency is always the same as dispute.currency on a merchant_credited_and_recovered case, which is the cardholder’s billing currency. Only USD as the billing currency is supported for partial refunds at this time.
Updating the cardholder’s disputed amount after filing is not supported. The
merchant_credited_and_recovered state reflects that the cardholder recovered
their full disputed amount, partially via refund and partially via chargeback.
